Should We Celebrate Lent?

In some circles, this is an important week.

In New Orleans, today is Mardi Gras, which in French means “Fat Tuesday.” In “Rio” it is Carnaval (Portuguese). Both refer to a celebratory carnival that leads up to the beginning of Lent. The name “Fat Tuesday” refers to the practice of consuming food forbidden while fasting during Lent. Lent begins the next day which we call Ash Wednesday when ashes are placed on believers’ foreheads as a sign of repentance.

While Mardi Gras has gained a reputation for its hedonism, Lent is known as a time of reflection, repentance, and recommitment leading up to the celebration of Christ’s resurrection at Easter. It lasts 40 days from Ash Wednesday to Resurrection Sunday.

Traditionally, in some denominations, there are certain rules that govern behavior. On Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and on all the Fridays of Lent everyone of age 14 and up must abstain from consuming meat. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday everyone of age 18 to 59 must fast, unless exempt due to a medical reason.

Many who observe Lent today are not as strict. Often, they choose to abstain from a particular food or behavior (such as watching TV, for example) during Lent. The idea is to stop some pleasurable activities and instead use the time and energy to focus on taking stock of one’s own spiritual condition and repenting for spiritual failures.

The 40 days of Lent are also a time of grief. All Christians celebrate the resurrection of Christ each Easter. But do we spend much time grieving over our sins that caused the brutal execution of Christ? Perhaps if we are to truly appreciate the great cost to Christ for our salvation, we would meditate on our sinfulness. This meditation should lead observers of Lent to turn away from their sins and recommit themselves to holiness.

While our particular denomination doesn’t traditionally observe Lent, can we still appreciate its relevance? Can we take the weeks leading up to Good Friday to meditate on the Cross, the sacrifice of Christ that was made for our Salvation and prepare to celebrate His victory over death through His resurrection?

Jesus said that when we partake in communion, we should do this “in remembrance of Me.” While that should be our year-round practice, would it hurt us to use the next few weeks to focus more on our spiritual rather that our physical needs? Perhaps such meditation would lead us to appreciate anew the cost of grace and the victory of the empty tomb.
